Quick summary of Fjellheisen Cable Car

Fjellheisen is a 4–5 minute aerial tram ride from Tromsdalen up to Storsteinen, Tromso's most accessible mountain viewpoint at 421m above sea level, with a café, sweeping panoramas, and trails on toward Fløya.

  • Ways to explore: Choose a Fjellheisen round-trip ticket or a Fjellheisen round-trip ticket with shuttle bus transfer from Tromso city center.
  • Altitude: 421m above sea level at the Storsteinen upper station.
  • Boarding point: All tickets share one lower station, at Solliveien 12, Tromsdalen.
  • Queues & access: There’s no skip-the-line option. After winter sunset, queues for the ride down can be longer than the ride up and may take up to an hour.
  • When to book: Winter sunset and blue-hour visits are the busiest, so queues can be longer. For a quieter experience, visit during the day or outside peak hours.
  • Best upgrade: Add a shuttle to make your winter visit easier, with a bus from Tromso city center to Fjellheisen and your cable car ride and transfer on one ticket.

Starting your journey

Board at the lower station on Solliveien 12 in Tromsdalen. Cars usually depart at the start and halfway through each hour, with extra departures added when demand is high. Waits are generally short outside peak evening hours.

The ride up

The cable car climbs nearly 340 metres in elevation from the lower station during the 4–5-minute ride, taking you to Storsteinen at 421 metres above sea level.

Signature Tromso views

Step out to sweeping panoramas over Tromso island, the Tromsobrua bridge, surrounding fjords and mountains, plus city lights and blue-hour glow in winter.

Floya-bound trail continuation

Mountain trail extension – upper station route. Starting from the upper station and Fjellstua area, this trail extension turns your visit into a longer mountain outing. It goes beyond the main viewpoint and is ideal if you’re using Fjellheisen as a starting point for exploring Floya rather than just visiting the viewpoint.

Ticket upgrades

Make getting there easier: Add a shuttle bus from Tromsø city center to Fjellheisen for a simpler winter journey, with your shuttle and cable car ride covered by one ticket.

Things to know before booking Fjellheisen Cable Car tickets

Booking window

  • Fjellheisen tickets are available with timed entry. Booking ahead is a good idea if you want to visit on a specific day or around sunset.
  • A timed ticket helps you plan your visit but doesn’t give you priority boarding.

What’s included

  • A standard Fjellheisen ticket includes a round-trip cable car ride to Storsteinen.
  • You can add a shuttle bus from Tromsø city center.
  • Food, drinks, and other expenses aren’t included.

Entrances & flow

  • Board at the lower station on Solliveien 12 in Tromsdalen.
  • The ride takes around 4–5 minutes each way.
  • Departures are at the start and halfway through each hour.
  • During busy winter periods, waits can be around 30 minutes for the ride up and up to an hour for the ride down.

Ways to explore

Policies & rules

  • Fjellheisen is currently not accessible to wheelchair users or visitors who need walkers due to ongoing reconstruction, which is expected to continue through 2027.
  • The cable car may close in difficult weather.
  • Ticket validity can vary depending on where you book, so check the terms for your ticket before visiting.

The city unfolding below

From the upper viewpoint, Tromso spreads across its island setting in a neat ribbon of streets, rooftops, and harbor edges. Bridges stitch the city to the mainland, while water wraps around both sides, making the whole scene feel compact, bright, and surprisingly open.

Tips & guidelines for the Fjellheisen Cable Car

  • Even in clear weather, the upper platform is exposed and colder than town; wear windproof layers, hat, and gloves, especially if are planning to wait outside for changing light.
  • In winter, pack footwear with good grip and optional spikes if you’ll explore beyond the platform; Sherpatrappa and nearby paths can be icy and partly in avalanche-prone terrain.
  • Head straight to the outdoor viewpoint when you arrive, then use the café; delaying the view can leave you stuck in thicker descent queues once the best light has passed.
  • If you’ve booked another activity afterward, leave generous buffer time before it; winter evening returns are particularly unpredictable, and you can’t count on a quick trip down.
  • Phones drain faster in the cold, yet you’ll likely shoot many photos; keep your device inside an inner pocket and consider a small power bank for longer winter stays.
